Week Four: Assignment One

RTI is a program that enables teachers to have a clear understanding of the level of each of their students. By constantly assessing students' development, no child can slip by and each student receives exactly what he/she needs. The general education teacher gives the whole class high quality, evidence-based instruction using a reading program. When the teacher sees that some students are not keeping up, those students receive tier two instruction. Tier two is smaller groups and more intense instruction. The students in tier two still participate in the general classroom instruction, but receive an additional 30 minutes. The small percentage of students that are not progressing even after tier two instruction, receive more instruction time, individually or in very small groups. These students will be evaluated for special education.
My question is: when do the students that need tier 2 or 3 instruction receive that extra thirty minutes or hour instruction? If they are included in the general tier 1 instruction, do they have to miss lunch or a different important lesson?

  1. Judging by what I see in the videos, the students receive the extra time in the classroom with a professional. It is a good question. I do not believe it is done their recess or lunch time. Does anyone work in a school where RTI is incorporated?

  2. Yes it is done through instructional groupings. And it stresses on the instructional intervention teachers do for students. So if student does not improve in tier one, then teachers plan more intensive instructional intervention activities during class (with or without aid's assistance, depending on the school budget), and if the student still does not improve, then in tier 3, teachers would refer the student for special ed service. Or the special ed teacher would Teach In the classroom with a group of students who are reading at at-risk level.

  3. You raised an important point. Time is a very important factor to consider when planning interventions. A teacher must think, will this intervention take time off other activities or lessons?

  4. The extra 30 minutes could be given at different times depending on the teacher. A teacher could work with these struggling students while the rest of the class does independent or peer leaded group work.
